Hans Potthorst und vermutlich auch Didrik Pining segelten eigenen Angaben nach, 100 Meilen über Thule hinaus. Potthorst gab intern zu, an Land gegangen zu sein und geplündert zu haben. Was immer es auch bei den Indigenen zu plündern gab. Sollte Columbus also auf Potthorsts Schiff gewesen sein, wäre es also durchaus möglich, dass er amerikanischen Boden betrat, bevor er Amerika im Auftrag der kastilischen Krone entdeckte.
